Florida may lose some more Red Lobster locations by the end of the month.
Last month, Red Lobster filed bankruptcy documents that included plans to close more restaurants in rejected leases, which the company said were losing money. The seafood chain already closed nearly 100 locations around the country without warning, including at least 17 in Florida.
In an Aug. 22 court filing, Red Lobster is taking aim at 23 locations off their list, including three in Florida. Restaurants in Fort Walton Beach, Pensacola and Port Richey will close and be vacated by Aug. 31 if an Orlando judge agrees. The hearing is set for Aug,. 29, according to Orlando Business Journal.
Red Lobster is readying for a possible sale to RL Purchaser LLC, which is organized and controlled by Fortress Credit Corporation, a company that has been acquiring other bankrupt companies recently, such as Alamo Drafthouse andVice Media.
Red Lobster, which started in Lakeland, Floridaand grew to be the largest seafood chain in the world, said it has more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand,CNN reported. It plans to sell the business to its lenders for financing to keep going.
While some blamed the chain's popular "endless shrimp promotion" for bringing the company down, experts pointed toinflationary prices, lease obligations above market rates, and operational decisions.
